Common calculations

Use either net amounts or gross amounts consistently. Do not mix both bases in one calculation.

Typical variants

Markup and margin, side by side

The same percentage read once as a markup and once as a margin, with the selling price each one produces on a cost of 100. A 50% markup is not a 50% margin, and this is the table that shows by how much they differ.

About this tool

Margin is profit divided by the selling price. Markup is the same profit divided by the cost. A product that costs 100 and sells for 150 therefore has a 33.33% margin and a 50% markup.

Enter any two values that define the transaction, such as cost and price, cost and target margin, price and profit, or profit and markup. The calculator completes the remaining amounts and percentages. Margin and markup alone cannot determine monetary values because neither provides a cost or price scale.

Use net amounts consistently for business pricing or gross amounts consistently for a consumer price check. The result also identifies a sale below cost, which is useful when checking a discount before it is applied.

Questions people actually ask

What is the difference between margin and markup?
Margin divides profit by the selling price. Markup divides the same profit by the cost. With a cost of 100 and a price of 150, profit is 50, margin is 33.33% and markup is 50%.
How do I convert a markup to a margin?
Divide the markup rate by one plus that rate. A 50% markup is 0.5 ÷ 1.5 = 33.33% margin. In the other direction, divide the margin rate by one minus that rate.
What price gives me a 30% margin?
Divide the cost by 0.7. A cost of 100 with a target margin of 30% gives a selling price of 142.86. Adding 30% to the cost would instead produce a 23.08% margin.
Can a margin be more than 100%?
Not when the cost is positive. Margin approaches 100% as the cost approaches zero. Markup has no fixed upper limit because it is measured against cost.
How does a discount affect my margin?
Enter the cost and the price after discount. The calculator shows the remaining profit, margin and markup, and clearly marks a price below cost.
