About this tool
Converts between fuel consumption and fuel economy: litres per 100 km, miles per gallon in both US and imperial gallons, and kilometres per litre. These run in opposite directions - more MPG is less l/100 km - so the conversion is a reciprocal, not a factor.

Good to know
Questions people actually ask
- Why can't I multiply l/100 km to get MPG?
- Because they measure opposite things. l/100 km is consumption - smaller is better - and MPG is distance per fuel, where bigger is better. The conversion divides rather than multiplies: MPG (US) = 235.215 ÷ l/100 km.
- Is US MPG the same as UK MPG?
- No. The imperial gallon is 20 % larger, so the same car rated at 30 MPG in the US is about 36 MPG in the UK. Both are listed separately here.
