Trigonometry formulas

Degrees and radians

Convert an angle between degrees, radians, gons and turns, reduce it to one full turn, and read the exact multiple of π.

Formula

α[rad]=α[°]×π180 α[rad] = α[°] × π / 180

One full turn equals 360° and 2π rad, so a single degree is π/180 radians. The radian is the coherent derived SI unit of plane angle and has dimension one.

Formula rearrangements

Degrees to radians

α[rad] = α[°] × π / 180

Radians to degrees

α[°] = α[rad] × 180 / π

Degrees and gons

α[gon] = α[°] × 10 / 9

Angle as a fraction of a turn

k = α[°] / 360 = α[rad] / (2π)

Reduce to one full turn

α₀ = α − 360° × ⌊α / 360°⌋

Worked examples

Sixty degrees in radians

Express the angle 60° in radians and give the exact multiple of π.

  1. 1Step 1: Use α[rad] = α[°] × π / 180.
  2. 2Step 2: Simplify the fraction: 60 / 180 = 1/3.
  3. 3Step 3: Multiply by π to obtain π/3 rad, approximately 1.0472 rad.

Result: π/3 rad ≈ 1.0472 rad

Angle larger than a full turn

Reduce 450° to the range 0–360° and write the result in radians.

  1. 1Step 1: Count the whole turns: 450 / 360 = 1.25, so one full turn is removed.
  2. 2Step 2: Subtract it: 450° − 360° = 90°, which is the same direction on the unit circle.
  3. 3Step 3: Convert the normalised angle: 90° × π / 180 = π/2 rad, approximately 1.5708 rad.

Result: 90° = π/2 rad ≈ 1.5708 rad
