About this tool
Converts between grays and rads, the units of energy deposited by ionising radiation. Absorbed dose is kept separate from equivalent dose (sieverts) because the two are linked only through a weighting factor that depends on the type of radiation.

Good to know
Questions people actually ask
- What is the difference between a gray and a sievert?
- A gray measures energy absorbed; a sievert weights that energy by how damaging the radiation type is to tissue. For X-rays and gamma the weighting is 1, so the numbers match - for alpha particles they differ by a factor of 20.
